Victoriana – straight-laced, uptight, by-the-rules. They were concerned with a great many things: themselves, their stations, and to one extent or another, society around them. They were the social crusaders. They were prim and proper.

It was with these preconceived notions heavy on the land that The Pearl debuted. Between 1878 and 1880, 18 issues of the erotic magazine were printed. Eventually, they were forced to shut down by the authorities for publishing rude and obscene literature. [1]

Among short stories, bawdy poetry, and other sorts of humor, there are six serialized novels: Sub-Umbra, Miss Coote's Confession, Lady Pokingham, La Rose D'Amour, My Grandmother's Tale, and Flunkeyania. [2]

And all this from the so-called prudish Victorians.
